The nose takes centre stage on the face as it is perhaps our most prominent feature.

Its size, shape, and symmetry can greatly influence our overall aesthetics. Nose shape is determined by genetics and is occasionally affected by circumstances (i.e. physical trauma). Oftentimes it can seem incongruent or appear to overshadow other features.

Changing the shape, size, symmetry, of the nose is termed Rhinoplasty. Many individuals choose to alter the aesthetics of their nose. Rhinoplasty can be done either surgically or non-surgically.

Let’s compare the advantages and limitations of both Surgical & Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Basics

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty can achieve a host of sought after results. It is particularly effective for addressing mild to moderate issues such as the following:
· Asymmetry or uneven appearance of the nose
· Bumps or dents on the nose
· Minimal appearance of a nose bridge
· A nose tip that appears to go down / droop

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty Procedure

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty involves the injection of dermal fillers in key areas to alter the appearance of the nose. It may take place in one session or require multiple sessions based on the results that the individual wants to achieve. While the procedure is fairly simple, it is of utmost importance that the fillers used be expertly injected for maximum affect. Local Anaesthetic cream is used to ensure the individual’s comfort. Blunt-tip Cannula’s may be employed instead of needles to assist in achieving control in filler placement.

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty Recovery

One major advantage of a non-surgical procedure is that it requires no scheduled downtime. While there may be some slight swelling on the site, there should be no major inflammation or recovery period incurred. It does not require General Anaesthesia or an overnight observation. In fact, it can often be done in under an hour and an individual can resume normal activities soon afterwards. Due to the fact it is a non-surgical in nature, the medical complications and risks that accompany surgery are low.

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty Results

Non-surgical results are not permanent but they are long lasting. On average, they last between 6 and 24 months. For some individuals, this is a bonus and they take advantage of the non-surgical option to ‘try out’ how a change affects their self-confidence and appearance. Some individuals will go-on to receive Surgical Rhinoplasty, while others will continue with a repeat of the non-surgical option.

Note: Fillers are specifically chosen by experienced doctors for their reliability and function based on what is trying to be achieved. Individuals do not need to worry that routine activity’s like blowing or wiping one’s nose will shift or reshape the fillers used in Non-surgical Rhinoplasty.

Surgical Rhinoplasty Basics

Surgical Rhinoplasty is a more complex medical procedure than its non-surgical alternative. It can address a host of issues. These include not only the appearance of the nose but also the function of the nose. For instance, it can provide for:
· Major restructuring of the nose
· Addressing congenital conditions
· Eliminating nasal blocks and improving breathing problems

Surgical Rhinoplasty Procedure

The exact technique employed in Surgical Rhinoplasty will depend on the needs of the individual. The procedure usually takes between 1 and 3 hours. Dr Potgieter can perform both open and closed Rhinoplasty at his Sandton Address. Open Rhinoplasty involves an incision along the columella for complete access to all the nasal tissue. Closed Rhinoplasty relies on only internal incisions.

Surgical Rhinoplasty Recovery

Surgical Rhinoplasty will require scheduled downtime for recovery. In most instances Open Rhinoplasty will require more recovery time then Closed Rhinoplasty. One should expect a minimum of two weeks recovery time.

Swelling will be present at the site and may extend outwards, especially in the first few days after surgery. A protective splint will be worn immediately afterwards for up to ten days. Internal splints may be used for support but are usually removed sooner. Any pain or discomfort will be managed through medications but should greatly reduce after the first 48 hours.

Surgical Rhinoplasty Results

Surgical results are permanent. Results may be visible around the four-week mark after surgery. However, due to internal swelling that may be present, allow further time to pass before assessing your new look. It takes at least 3-6 months for the swelling to subside and the lasting result to emerge. One advantage of Surgical Rhinoplasty is that once recovery is complete, one can enjoy the results without need for further intervention.

An experienced reputable surgeon is required for successful (surgical or non-surgical) Rhinoplasty results.
