Up to 60% of men will suffer from some degree of Gynaecomastia at some point in their lives!
The recognition that Gynaecomastia is more common than previously acknowledged has assisted in changing perceptions. It has opened up discussion on both its causes and the detrimental affect it may have on body confidence.
Gynaecomastia Surgery is now accessible; its availability and the results it provides has made it accepted as an established and reliable treatment. One whose demand is growing.
Men who are diagnosed with Gynaecomastia display excess glandular breast tissue &/ fatty tissue in one or both breasts; this results in visible male breast enlargement. The areola may also increase in size. The severity of Gynaecomastia is determined by breast size, shape, breast ptosis, areola texture, skin elasticity, tissue volume, and excess skin.
What causes Gynaecomastia?
The cause of Gynaecomastia is not always known. It can be difficult to decipher what has led to the development of Gynaecomastia. Some have associated it with our modern and increasingly sedentary lifestyle that includes an onslaught of environmental pollutants and conflicting information on dietary choices.
Gynaecomastia is frequently linked with certain medical conditions, medications and endocrine system function. Variations in hormone production or low levels in testosterone may result in Gynaecomastia. Hormone production is affected by age, genetics, pharmaceutical drugs, stress and more. It is important to note that certain cancer treatments (including chemotherapy) may lead to an increase in the growth of breast tissue.
Gynaecomastia Treatment Options
Regardless of what treatment is decided on, a healthy active lifestyle is often the best place to start.
Exercise reduces fatty tissue and as such may be utilized to reduce the fatty tissue in the breast. Dietary choices & regular exercise can offer amazing results that go beyond the aesthetic. However, the amount of excess skin, hardness of breast tissue and other qualifying factors may make surgery a truly viable option.
Gynaecomastia Surgery Explained
Gynaecomastia Surgery can significantly impact a man’s aesthetic. It can resize and reshape the breasts. It works to achieve symmetry and provide a lean contour. Muscle is not removed and thus once can still build strong muscle groups and a defined chest following surgical intervention.
Individual anatomy and target objectives discussed with your surgeon will determine the specific details and approach of your Gynaecomastia surgery. During a Gynaecomastia local anaesthetic or general anaesthesia is used dependent on the extent of the surgery objectives.
Liposuction: When excess fatty tissue alone is the main concern – Liposuction on its own may prove effective. As Liposuction can not remove excess skin or glandular tissue, tissue excision, detailed below, is often the best choice in most significant cases of Gynaecomastia.
Tissue Excision i.e. Pull Through Technique: In the most basic procedures all that is required to treat Gynaecomastia is a small 5mm incision created along the bottom half of the areola. Through this opening, excess glandular tissue and fat are removed. Remaining tissues is then re-positioned and sutured to the underlying muscle layer to assist in achieving a smooth appearance.
Two Stage Procedure: In a slightly more complex two stage procedure, Liposuction first removes excess fat and then the above Pull Through Technique is carried out.
Skin Redundancy or elasticity concerns: In cases where skin redundancy or loss of skin elasticity is a major concern, excess skin will be removed. If large amounts of skin are removed the nipple and areola complex will be positioned accordingly.
Recovering from Gynaecomastia Surgery
Follow your surgeon’s instructions to the letter to achieve the best results possible.
Scheduled downtime is necessary with Gynaecomastia surgery. Any pain or discomfort can be well-managed with medication and will be most significant in the first 24-48 hours. Within 5-7 days most normal activities can be resumed. Swimming, exercise regiments, and lifting will be restricted for up to several weeks following surgery. Recovery can be complete in as little as four weeks.
Scarring will be impacted by procedure particulars, most individuals are surprised to learn that it is often barely visible if noticeable at all. The exception to this is when major skin reduction is undertaken.
