Sculpting your curves is a process of diligent lifestyle choices including physical exercise and nutrition. At times even this is not enough. This is when professional assistance may enter the picture. Liposuction is an established Cosmetic Surgery that has been refined through the years. It allows for targeted intervention and removal of unwanted fat deposits that resist other approaches.

Liposuction is an excellent body contouring procedure for suitable candidates.

Where to start?

The traditional means of addressing body shape are certainly worth investing in. Refining lifestyle choices of regular exercise, choice nutrition and adequate sleep can promote a healthy immune system and sense of wellbeing. Selfcare and a sense of moderation can be beneficial and beautiful.

If these methods fail to create the desired aesthetic, one can investigate additional options. Liposuction offers an opportunity to address specific problem areas. Most commonly it is used to address the torso, legs, arms, buttocks, breasts and chin area.

Keep in mind that Liposuction is a procedure aimed at refining one’s shape and is not a weight-loss procedure. While some weight may be lost in treatment areas, Liposuction will not substantially reduce one’s weight.

What to Consider?

Liposuction is not appropriate for all individuals. Factors which may affect suitability include:
• Age
• Skin qualities
• Underlying medical conditions
• High BMI (Body Mass Index)
• Chronic Smoking

To determine if Liposuction could be a good option for you; schedule a consultation with Dr Potgieter for an evaluation and conversation about where you are now and where you would like to be after surgery.

Getting the Best Results Possible

Realistic and educated expectations will contribute significantly to making your experience a positive one. Take the time to explore your motivation and be aware that self-motivated surgeries supply more satisfaction. An acknowledgement of the inherent risks of any surgery along with a thorough understanding of the recovery process will also be of benefit.

If you are not close to your ideal weight, now is the time to take steps to achieve that goal. If done in a healthy manner, burning more calories than one consumes – to improve your fitness and health can have inherent value in & of itself. It can also improve final outcomes and assist with recovery.

Planning and Preparing for Liposuction Surgery

• Potentially lessen inflammation following surgery by addressing medication and supplement intake with your Doctor thoroughly before surgery.
• Consider when is the best time for scheduling surgery; be prepared to clear your calendar for scheduled downtime afterwards.
• Incisions are minimal but you can investigate scar minimising skincare. Be sure to ask your Surgeon.
• Use compression garments advised by your Surgeon.
• Ensure you have a reliable friend or family member to drive you home following the surgery.
• Prepare loose and comfortable clothing for recovery.

Surgery Specifics

Liposuction surgery specifics vary widely as each procedure objectives are finely tuned to each Patient. Generally speaking, Liposuction can be performed under general or local anaesthesia. When possible, it may allow for recovery to happen at home without an overnight stay in clinic.

Liposuction surgery itself takes between 60 to 120 minutes dependent on the areas addressed and volume removed. During surgery small incisions are created to serve as access points. Through these, excess fat is removed via a hollow cannula and usually with the assistance of a medical suction device. Following which, incisions are closed.

Liposuction Recovery Requirements

The extensiveness of a Liposuction surgery will influence the recovery timeline and protocol. During the first 24-48 hours drainage and discomfort will be at its highest. Persevere though, as most individuals can return to non-strenuous work between 5-7 days following surgery. Inflammation will lessen daily as the body heals. Bruising may appear on skin and last for 2-3 weeks. Strenuous exercise may not be resumed for 4 weeks and only when given clearance from your Doctor. Incisions from Liposuction are very small and most fade to be nearly invisible with time.

Liposuction results can be seen quickly but final results will only be apparent once all visible inflammation is gone (it can take 3-6 months to fully appreciate the outcome). Follow post-operative protocols as closely as possible to aid recovery.

Complementary Procedures

At times it can be appropriate to combine multiple procedures. Liposuction can be paired with an Abdominoplasty (aka ‘tummy tuck’) and some other types of surgical ‘lifts’. It is also worth noting that the fat removed during a Liposuction procedure may be utilized as natural fat filler during a Natural Fat Augmentation procedure.
