Correct protrusion, asymmetry and reduce the size of overly large ears.

Ear pinning, ear shaping or ear surgery, Dr Anton Potgieter has performed multiple cases of what is surgically known as Otoplasty surgery. The principle idea behind the surgery is to correct protrusion, asymmetry and reduce the size of overly large ears.

The surgery is available to anyone. It is usually performed at ages 5-7 (before school going age), but adults can also undergo the procedure. The surgery can be performed at any age after 5 years once the ear has reached about 70% or more of its adult size.
The aim of Corrective Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) is to create symmetrical & aesthetically pleasing ears.

How I perform the procedure

Depending on your needs the surgical approach may vary. These will all be discussed at length during the consultation process. Corrective ear surgery (Otoplasty) is usually performed under general anaesthetic in theatre. Patients will be allowed to head home the same day as the procedure should they recover well. An overnight stay is available if necessary.

Selected adult cases with minor needs can be done under local anaesthesia.

A critical part of the procedure is post-surgical care. After Corrective Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) the patient is wrapped in a head bandage for 10 days and you will be required to visit Dr Potgieter for dressing changes and follow up appointments. Patient satisfaction is extremely high after undergoing Otoplasty or corrective ear surgery, and the chances of relapse are small.

In difficult cases, Otoplasty surgery may be covered by medical aid, but most of the time the procedure is considered cosmetic and will not be covered. It is also important to note that Corrective Ear Surgery does not affect hearing in any way.
